Lawyers and Psychiatrists Answer the Tough Questions in The Walking Dead

Daily and Ryan M. Davidson, who recently collaborated on a panel at WonderCon entitled “Not Guilty by Reason of Zombification? Law and Forensic Psychiatry After the Zombie Apocalypse.” As lawyers and psychiatrists, they address the legal and medical questions raised by the many extreme situations in The Walking Dead TV show.

The AMC television series The Walking Dead, based on the comic book series of the same name, has rapidly become one of the most famous examples of the zombie fiction genre. Although the series takes place during a time when federal, state, and local governments have basically failed, it’s important to remember that, assuming some kind of government is eventually reconstituted, the survivors may still have to answer for their actions during the zombie apocalypse.

There is no statute of limitations on murder, after all, and there is historical precedent for isolated people in dire circumstances being called to account after the fact, such as survivors of shipwrecks.

Do the Undead Have Legal Responsibilities?

Obviously the walkers themselves cause most of the deaths in The Walking Dead, but could they ever be held legally responsible in any way? To answer this question, we must first answer the question “Are walkers legally dead or legally alive?” The answer may not be as obvious as you might think, as the cause of the zombie plague in The Walking Dead works a little differently than in other zombie fiction.

Strano messaggio trasmesso in diretta da tre stazioni tv locali statunitensi, due in Michigan ( Wnmu e Wbup) e una in Montana (Krtv). Mentre i programmi andavano avanti, una voce metteva in guardia che "i corpi dei morti stanno risorgendo dalle loro tombe e stanno attaccando i vivi". Le tv danno la colpa a qualche hacker buontempone. Secondo le autorità l'attacco non arriva dagli Stati Uniti bensì dall'estero. (Da Repubblica.it)

Tre recenti casi di cannibalismo. Paura sul web: Zombie Apocalypse è la terza parola più cliccata su Google Usa

Un uomo che divora il viso di un senza tetto a Miami, uno studente che mangia il cuore di un suo inquilino nel Maryland, un altro che uccide e poi degusta un uomo e infine fa perdere le proprie tracce (gli inquirenti si dicono certi sia scappato in Francia). Che cosa sta succedendo negli Stati Uniti, in molti si sono chiesti? Non è che per caso qualche virus strano è scappato di mano da qualche centro di ricerca e stiamo diventando tutti zombie? I tre recenti casi di cronaca sono veri, la domanda è da film di fantascienza, ma qualcuno ha dato una risposta seria. E se questo qualcuno è la serissima Cdc, agenzia federale americana per il controllo e la prevenzione delle malattie, paragonabile al nostro Istituto superiore di sanità, la notizia suscita interesse.

RASSICURAZIONE - Contattata dall’Huffington Post in merito alle molte storie che negli ultimi giorni sono circolate sul web negli Stati Uniti (il termine «zombie apocalypse» è il terzo più cliccato su Google Usa), la Cdc ha precisato in modo accuratamente scientifico che al momento «non si conoscono virus o malattie in grado di riportare in vita i morti o che presentano sintomi paragonabili a quelli degli zombie». Ora siamo tutti più rassicurati. Anche se alcuni siti tra il gossip e la semplice spazzatura come Gawker e Long Island Press ci stanno andando a nozze. Anche la Cdc in passato aveva – con leggerezza – usato l’immagine degli zombie per una campagna di prevenzione: «Se siete equipaggiati per far fronte a un attacco in massa di zombie, dovete essere pronti per affrontare un uragano, un’epidemia, un terremoto o un attacco terrorista».

GIUSTIFICAZIONE - La Cdc si era giustificata dicendo di voler raggiungere con questo messaggio un pubblico più giovane. Ma chi evoca gli zombie, rischia poi di essere da loro aggredito... Quello che è sicuro è che «là fuori» c’è qualcuno a cui piace la carne umana. E non sono zombie.
